Allie Unger, B.Des

Science Communicator

Allie believes that connecting people with the natural world has transformative power, and she has honed her skills in graphic design and writing to tell stories about it.

Before joining Fuse, she had a lifelong involvement in creative work, spanning graphic design, non-profit communications, and arts education. These roles included Communications Coordinator for The Immigrant Education Society, Visual Arts Instructor at Arts Commons, and freelance illustrator on commissioned projects. Throughout her career, she has developed communication materials for diverse audiences by synthesizing illustration, design, writing, photography, and motion.

In addition to her creative background, Allie brings several years of recent experience working as a science technician on the Pacific coast, supporting stock assessment of marine fish with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and shellfish research with the Deep Bay Marine Field Station. She volunteers with citizen science initiatives on Vancouver Island, including light trap monitoring, adipose fin clipping, and bird banding. When she’s not working, you can usually find her by the ocean shore, snorkelling, scuba diving or looking for critters in the intertidal zone.

Allie holds a Bachelor of Visual Communications Design from Alberta University of the Arts and a Fisheries & Aquaculture Diploma from Vancouver Island University.
